Immigration Poll

Recently, I introduced a Poll into this Blog (Bernie’s Greek Poll - July, 2015).  It developed very little interest, perhaps because most people are nationalists and considered Greece, wrongly, as insignificant.

Perhaps, as a Poll, I presented it to produce comments as answers, instead of check boxes.

Please excuse my persistence as I present another.  This time, about the really important, and controversial, subject of asylum seekers.

The world, that’s you and I, contribute trillions of dollars annually to the problem of asylum seekers, either nationally or by way of the UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees).

Recently, a serious suggestion has been presented that a new UN State be created to which all asylum seekers be sent (Australia has already created a germ of the idea).  There are hundreds of uninhabited islands globally for which this idea could be established if the trillions of dollars were directed to it.

The new state would be developed with temporary homes, schools, workplaces, etc., and immigration representatives from various countries would evaluate and select the real refugees from the illegal economic asylum seekers.

Once, developed, all countries could ban or deport the asylum seekers unless they had been registered by the UNHCR within the new state.

Do you believe this to be a suitable answer to the immigration problem (I should welcome either a comment or just an anonymous check (Yes, No or Maybe).  Please note;  Your vote will be counted within the app. but, for some weird reason it will not be visible on this page.  I shall reveal the numbers at a later date.

  1. Please accept my apologies for Google's need to update their polling app.

  2. Touche. I like your idea of a country for immigrants. We can do one for prisoners too — our jails are overflowing and then we can fill them again with the entire ANC government.

Where exactly will you find enough land for this refugee state? As far as I can see the only options are the arctics and the deserts.

    1. I share your concerns about government but we must reserve such an enjoyable subject for another time.

Of course, the Arctic or a desert would be unsuitable without high walls and razor wire, and it should be a place with humane restrictions. Therefore, an island will have a natural sea defence.

Australia has such a facility on Manus Island (Papua New Guinea) and one might argue that the US has a similar facility at Guantanamo Bay (Cuba). I am led to believe that there are hundreds of such islands in the world.

The status quo is surely out of the question.

    1. I wish him luck but it won't happen. Such an island would become a bigger refugee camp.

    2. @isoman and friends; I am searching for reasonable ideas. The island state/s idea is the only one that I know of.

I live next to refugee families, and their numbers are growing noticeably. The huge numbers of refugees roaming throughout most of Europe at the moment, will be coming to North America soon, even though the majority are illegal asylum seekers.

Yesterday, I read of a Canadian church offering to provide a home to a Syrian family ... yes, just one family! On the other hand, there were hundreds of marchers in Germany shouting, “Let’s welcome all of them.” Actually, I think that they said, “Jeder ist willkommen.” It certainly seems that few people are aware of the enormity of the problem.

I have lived next to gypsy camps in the U.K. and France, and I can assure you that you don’t want that experience ... certainly not in Port Credit.

There needs to be controls. This would be impossible where so-called refugees could escape from camps. There must be a system of efficient authentication in order that the illegal people are quickly deported. And there must be humane conditions for those waiting for refugee visas.

Unless there is a place supervised by the UNHCR, together with the Red Cross (for example) and immigration authorities from many countries, there will continue to be anarchy, violence, and chaos.

Where there is a will, there is a way ... hopefully.
